Beauty Products for the African American Woman

Thankfully, African American women and other females of African descent are no longer forced to use make up and beauty products not designed for their skin type. Many beauty product manufacturers have now diversified to capture a wider ethic market.

Well-Known Cosmetics for Black Women

The demand and expanding market for beauty products for women with darker skin tones have resulted in major cosmetic chains now making products for African American women. There are also companies that manufacture products just for black women. Some of these companies have developed a name internationally, while others are known only in their niche markets.

• Covergirl Cosmetics

  When it comes to foundation, Covergirl, The Queen Collection has great choices for the African American woman. As a matter of fact this line was created specifically for black women.

  The line also includes lips pencils in shades that suit the various hues of women of African descent. Also included are mascara, eyeliner and eye-shadow in all the colors a black woman will need, such as violet, brown and purple.

• Iman Cosmetics

  Developed by a black woman for black women, Iman Cosmetics has passed the test of time. The Iman brand includes every beauty product that you will need, lipstick, foundation, eye-shadow, eyeliners, concealers and more.

• Fashion Fair Cosmetics

  Another well-known and popular creator of beauty products for African American women, Fashion Fair has been around since 1973. This line was formulated for women of color and markets itself as the “The World’s #1 line of skincare and makeup for women of color”. Long before many other makeup lines just for non-white women, Fashion Fair made products that suited darker skin tones.

  Apart from beauty products, Fashion Fair also has a line of skin care products such as cleansers and exfoliants.

• Dudley’s Beauty Products

  Mostly associated with hair care for black women, Dudley’s has now entered the beauty and cosmetic market for African American women. True to form, their products work well with all types and shades of black skin.

• Black Opal

  Black Opal skin care products and cosmetics were designed for the needs of black women and men. African American women can be sure of finding beauty products in the Black Opal line, whether for daytime or night-time makeup.

• Milani

  This is a line for women of every color and race, but it is not a one-size fits all concept. Each product is made for a specific skin type.

Black women, like all other races need to have the right type of approach to get the desired results from beauty products whether or not they are race specific. When it comes to foundation, the African American woman may find that she needs two foundations at any one time. A lighter shade for her forehead and nose, which sometimes tend to be a lighter shade than the rest of the face, and a darker foundation should be used for everywhere else. It is also important that the foundations are blended properly to avoid lines.

African American women are able to wear lots of vibrant colors in eye makeup. The main colors that they need to shy away from are very light colors such as white. Purples, blues and greens are great for night time eye-shadow.

With the wide variety of beauty products now on the market, African American women can afford to be discriminating these days when it comes to makeup.
